Wordly Attachments
Wednesday of the Fifth Week of Lent
My dear encountered couples:
Are you attached? Is there anything that would tear your heart up if you were separated from it? Look around your house. Is there a piece of furniture, a rug, a picture, a work of art, a family heirloom, anything at all that has become your pride and joy?
I think we all have some things that we hold onto for dear life. It is human nature that we do. And when a tornado or a fire or whatever comes along to take those things from us, we realize how much we valued them. But we realize even more how much we value the people in our lives.
There is no thing, no attachment to material things that is worth more than the people in our lives. We’ve all seen what family and friends mean to those who are interviewed on television after they have lost their homes. “My house is gone, I’ve lost everything, there is much I will never be able to replace. But my children, my husband, my wife, my loved ones are safe. And that’s what counts.”
We all come to that realization during troubled times. It is the people in our lives that are the most important to us. And when really serious troubles come – we find that it’s God in our lives that’s even more important.
Let us not wait for, nor need a disaster to take away what we are attached to. Let us often pray to Christ for freedom from our attachments to material things. “If the Son frees you,” Jesus said, “you will really be free.” Do we want to be free?
