HIS HEART WAS MOVED WITH PITY
Memorial of Saint Ambrose, Bishop and Doctor of the Church
My dear encountered couples:
“At the sight of the crowds, his heart was moved with pity for them” (Mt. 9:35-10:1, 6-8)
There are times when I am frustrated by my own weakness and limitations or those of others. Jesus regarded the neediness of others with a compassionate heart. He gives expression to regret that there aren't more people willing to lend their energies to attend to the needs of others. There is so much that we can do to build up, to strengthen, to encourage and heal one another. It is a ministry of the heart to which everyone is called. It is this ministry which nurtures hope.
Jesus asked his followers to proclaim the Good News to the world that he had risen! Evangelization was to be key in helping others to know the compassion and love of God that had broken into our world in the person of Jesus Christ.
Today, the same need is present. So many people, who claim to know Christ, really do not. Some know about him, but do not know him. Some know his teachings, but do not strive to live them. Others love him, but are scandalized by those who claim to be Christian, yet live selfish and uncharitable lives. They become discouraged by this hypocrisy and doubt that the Church today is the Church he wanted.
Can anyone proclaim Good News to these? Is there a way to dispel the darkness and doubts they have? Today, as in the day of Jesus, “At the sight of the crowds, his heart was moved with pity.”
