WHOEVER POSSESSES GOD, POSSESSESS LIFE
Friday after Epiphany
My dear encountered couples:
“Whoever possesses the Son of God possesses life. Whoever does not possess the Son of God does not possess life. I have written this to you to make you realize that you possess eternal life - you who believe in the name of the Son of God.”
That’s a powerful statement! John is saying that those “who believe in the name of the Son of God possess eternal life.” The pivot word is “believe.” Those who “believe.” That means you and me, doesn’t it, because we believe? I surely hope so.
But it is not a matter of merely saying we believe. It is a matter of whether our faith is so directed to Christ, so centered on him and on what he taught, that our words and actions of our every day of the week are guided and directed and inspired by his Spirit.
Does our believing make an essential difference in how we live in contrast to how we would live if we didn’t believe? Are we thinking and living differently from those who freely and honestly admit they don’t believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? That’s for you to know about yourself, for both of us to find out about ourselves. For if we do not think and live differently from unbelievers then quite possibly we are one of them. And that would mean we don’t possess eternal life.
What is it John wrote? “Whoever possesses the Son of God possesses life. Whoever does not possess the Son of God does not possess life. I have written this to you to make you realize that you possess eternal life - you who believe in the name of the Son of God.” Like always, our salvation depends on our faith!
